  • How Do I Get My Bengal Kitten To Stop Jumping At My Face, Biting And Scratching?

Posted on February 24th, 2010 admin 4 comments

I’ve had him for two months and he’s generally really sweet but sometimes he can be really naughty. If you say a stern no and put him on the floor he becomes vindictive and will jump at your face and bite you. I’ve never had a cat before so not sure if this is a Bengal thing or a kitten phase. Please help because I want him to grow up well behaved and nice. Quite often if I switch the light off at night before he’s ready to go to bed he’ll pounce on my face and bite me.

    • If you want the behavior to stop and you’ve already tried to stop the kitty with a no, then you may have to put the kitten in a time out in another room. The other thing is the cat may be bored out of his mind and not understand that not everyone plays like he does. Make sure that your cat has a lot toys to play with and at least one piece of cat furniture to keep him busy.
As for the night time playing, cats are nocturnal animals and the only way to avoid this behaviour is to keep the kitty in a seperate room (with a litter box and food of course) or to keep your door closed. I actually have an entire room set up for my cats and they are actually put to bed every night before I’m off to sleep. This is partly because I have stairs so they’d be up and down the stairs making lots of noise all night if I didn’t close them in. Cats can usually figure out your schedule and will adhere to it as they get used to you, but it really is much easier on cats when you have a pair because they can keep each other busy and will rely less on you as a playmate.

    • I had this problem with my first Tonkinese. She didn’t like eye contact and would lunge at my face (but never bit me). She mostly grew out of it by a year old. Now that she is three, she only does it a couple of times a year and only when she is feeling exceptionally frisky. When she was a kitten I made sure to put my head down rather than try to pull back. That way she got a facefull of hair. Now that she is older, I pull back but she hardly ever gets me. I gained some pretty quick reflexes. I’m pretty sure this is mostly a kitten thing. Tonks are known for exhibiting kitten-like behavior well into adulthood. I’m not sure about bengals. But either way, he should calm down quite a bit after being neutered and after getting a little older.

    • Wait about a year! Hehehe… Don’t worry so many kittens are this way and grow out of it. Try not to be mean to him though please, he just needs a playmate, if he had a sibling they would play together almost all the time while awake.

    • This is not the kind of cat a first time owner should have.
Unfortunately, you will have to wait until he gets a bit older, he MAY calm down. If he’s not neutered, I suggest doing this SOON. Neutering may help.
