  • Question About A Shedding Cat?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 admin 6 comments

This is actually a question for a friend but he has a short haired bengal and he’s given it lots of baths/ brushes it a lot, but it still sheds a lot and he sneezes from his allergies. Is there something he can do to get the excess fur out so he will stop sneezing and there wont be hair everywhere?

    • There are some good tips here: http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac…
Washing the cat too much could cause dry skin and make kitty produce more dander. If possible, someone else (maybe you?) should brush the cat. And the cat should be brushed somewhere that’s easy to clean (like a bathroom or outside if there’s a safe spot), so the hair and dander don’t get into the carpet.
Pretty Kitty has started a few questions about the Furminator – something I didn’t know about but am now looking into for my own cats. That seems like a great brush to use and got a lot of recommendations from people here.

I’ve been taking Alavert for years each spring, which was working well but I seem to have built up a tolerance to it. Using a neti pot helps considerably. It sounds gross and uncomfortable but it works really well and isn’t a hassle to use. I strongly recommend getting one.

    • Regularly bathing a cat is only going to result in an unhappy cat with skin problems. Your friend needs to start taking allergy meds, like 24-hour Claritin. Vacuuming consistently is also important, as is washing your hands after touching the cat.
I live with 3 cats and have pretty bad cat allergies, so I feel your pain, but it can definitely be managed!

    • When a cat sheds, it’s usually having a health problem, lack of vitamins. They all shed during change of season.. Give it vitamins (Felovite II) a little drop daily into food. Don’t bathe frequently, it will dry ithe skin. Brushing daily helps.. If there is excess shedding, see the Vet b/c it could have a problem, ie: ring worm, that you can’t see under the hair?? All cats shed during change of season, brushing & vitamins daily with meat twice daily, (Fancy Feast) and Iam’s dry food are good food products. No table scraps, but boiled chicken breast. Peggy

    • You shouldn’t bathe a cat to much. That could be a cause of the hair shedding. And his allergies, well you should take him to the vet and i think they just might give him some meds. (:
      Btw:
