  • Do Female Cats Spray/bleed When They Are In Heat.?

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 admin 9 comments

I want to breed my female Ragdoll and I am wondering what to expect from her when she is in heat. She is only 10 weeks now so I know I have awhile.
I also don’t want her to get a nasty female cat “attitude” from not being spayed. Any advice?

    • They do not bleed but they do sometimes spray.
You can only breed from your cat if she is registered for breeding, otherwise you will not be able to register the kittens as pedigrees and it would then be illegal to sell them as being pedigrees. You would have to give them away for the price of vaccinations.
If you had bought your cat as a breeding female the breeder would have given you advice about breeding. If you had bought her from a reputable breeder you would not have been able to get her until she was 13 weeks of age and had completed a course of vaccinations, so it appears to me to be doubtful that you will be able to breed from her.
If you are interested in cat breeding then go to some cat shows, meet some breeders and discuss it with them. Show a neuter first to get to know the breeds and breed standards etc. Then get a properly registered breeding queen from a reputable breeder who doesn’t flog kittens off before they are old enough to be rehomed. Cats need to be about a year old before they can go to stud. They need blood tests before they go. Breeding queens mustn’t go outdoors and mix with random cats who might impregnate them or pass on diseases such as feline AIDS.
Breeding a litter of kittens is a huge undertaking, lots of hard work and extremely costly. You have to be able to face lot of cleaning up, starting with blood, fluids and remains of afterbirths that aren’t eaten, then going on to lots of urine and faeces! You have to be able to afford large quantities of expensive, premium kitten food and cat litter and you need to expect damage to your house! It is rewarding for those who put in the work, but it can be hard work. It is not a decision to be taken lightly.

    • Yes they spray but there’s more to being a breeder than meets the eye. Queens shouldn’t be bred until they are at least 10 months old, preferably a year old…but she may go into heat much sooner (as early as 4-5 months). That’s four+ months of cycling spraying, howling, moaning and trying to get out of the house before she can even be bred. Are you really prepared to deal with that?
If she is bred before she is one year old, it can stunt her growth. During the time between her first heat cycle and being bred at 12 months, she may have some cat “attitude”…she’s going to want to mate and she’s not going to be able to. She’ll be frustrated and unhappy.
Is she a papered/registered animal? Did she come from a breeder? Did that breeder sell you breeding rights for her? This would need to be in writing. No reputable breeder would sell a kitten with breeding rights to an inexperienced breeder without a mentor. Do you have a mentor?
Breeding cats isn’t something to take lightly. Pure bred cats are bred to further the breed, not add to cat overpopulation. Please consider all the homeless animals before you bring more into the world.

    • they become very freindly try to go outside everytime you open the door so be careful lift up there backside everytime you try to pet them and meow all day for as long as shes in heat it gets really annoying i know i have females in heat and got them spayed just because of the meowing and becoming a little to freindly

    • Breeding is a big responsiblity. Please discuss with your vet before deciding that you’re ready to take this on. Female cats do NOT bleed when they are in heat. More than anything, they act crazy affectionate, meow ALOT and are pretty much very annoying.

    • Unlike dogs, female cats do not bleed when they are in heat. They can spray, tho. Some girls will be very friendly, some will not be. They might make a lot of noise, yowling and meowing at all hours of the day or night.

    • ??The Queen Has Spoken??

When I was breeding Persians, I never had a female get an attitude when in heat. Usually it’s the male who will spray to mark His Territory. Occasionally a female will spray… But that is rare.

    • Im not to sure if they bleed or not, mine never seemed to but they always were drippy down there clear thought. My recomendation to you is to let her go threw her first heat without breeding her so her body will be more ready then.

    • Your cat will become swollan. She will also start to yall… it’s really annoying. You will know… it’s not hard to tell.

    • my cat just had kittens 2 days ago. so im familiar with the whole cycle. when my cat was in heat she never blead or sprayed.
