We had good luck with diluted vinegar swabbed in with a kleenex. It changed the PH value inside the ear enough to keep them visibly cleaner and the buildup went down significantly. They say apple cider vinegar is better, but we only had the regular kind. I diluted it 50/50 with water.

Tresaderm is for treatment of ear mites, and really won’t do much for wax accumulation. A good ear cleaner (available from your vet) is one called Oti-calm. Much cheaper than tresaderm. Debrox is for humans and probably not recommended for use in cats, that the other two will probably make the problem worse, not better.

Hi I have a kitty that has very greasy black gunk in his ears even after I have had the vet rule out ear mites and infection numerous times. I use a general ear cleaner once weekly which prevents it from getting infected. I buy otirinse and put some on a cotton ball then wipe the gunk out of the cats ears. So far its done a great job and one bottle of otirinse lasts me forever and it cost me about $16. I had one vet tell me that orange cats or cats with any orange on them tend to have very greasy ears for some reason.

I use Epi-Otic on my cat. It’s not too expensive for a large-ish bottle, and it inhibits yeast and bacterial growth.
