  • The Real Deal On Ragdoll Cats?

Posted on September 20th, 2009 admin 6 comments

My Fiance and I are seriously thinking about making a nice investment into a Ragdoll kitten, after doing much research on them. Since we just can’t get a dog, we figured we’ll pay for a cat who is supposed to naturally be almost as loving & affectionate as a dog. My only issue is, are there any Ragdoll Cat owners who can truly valge for their adorable reputation? Is all the hype on them the truth?

    • Have met A LOT of different animals- Some ragdolls are HORRIBLE but a lot of them are very sweet, laid back and have bags of personality. Am definately a dog person, (shouldnt have favourites since I’m a vet) but if I were to get a cat, after a homeless moggie- I’d choose a Ragdoll

    • As a Ragdoll owner for almost three years I have to tell you it was the best investment my husband and I made. Unfortunately, our little Ragdoll, Gunnar, had a genetic defect called HCM (Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy) and Chylothorax (fluid in the chest cavity). Please please please find a breeder that tests for HCM. The test became available in May of 2007 to the general public. Our little baby, boy ragdoll kitty died on Nov 9th, 2008. We are just devastated. We have two other regular domestic kitties that we love dearly but, Gunnar was the neatest cat we have EVER had. I too had heard the rumors about these cats before we invested in him and let me tell you…they are true! Ragdolls are like little cat-dogs. They are the most awesome breed cat (animal) I have ever owned or had the pleasure to be around. Please do the research on the cons as well as the pros. There are many websites about HCM. Take care and good luck. My heart still aches for my baby boy, Gunnar but I hope my loss is your gain. You will want many years with your Ragdoll.

    • Ragdolls are the most dog-like cats I’ve met, but they are still cats. This means they may not follow you around 24/7 (though I’ve heard some do), but they are very affectionate and tolerant. Mine are always nearby, seeing what I’m up to, and will come up to me trying to get attention. And they are very floppy already (at 4 & 6 months old).
Just be sure to do your research on breeders, and you should end up with a wonderful kitten. Good luck!

    • Yes
Ragdolls are wonderfull we have had ours for nearly five years and he never fails to surprise us ,he has a very gentle nature he is very loving and very chatty , we also have a balinese who is beautifull but very neurotic since his dad died ,but they get on fine. They are both really vocal cats.

I have Selkirk Rex…they are the most loyal, affectionate catsI have found thusfar and a pretty new breed.
Sounds like you have done your research though so I bet you are going to be great kitty parents!
